Based on reading different posts at different forums, this is now my knowledge of the USA accreditation policy:
1. Regional accrediation. The Gold Standard. This gets you in everywhere. Schools and employers are all happy. 2. DETC/CHEA accrediation. The Silver Standard. This gets you in quite a lot of places, but not everywhere. Most employers finds it ok, but some don΄t. 3. State accredited degree This is valid in the current state, but most probably of no practical use outside the state in which it has been validated. You most likely will have problem to attend further education at schools with DETC/CHEA and RA standard. Most employers outside the state do not like this education. 4. Legal unaccredited degree Totally unaccredited degree, but still legal, so take it if you want it, because the school that is offering it has been given permit to do so. Will most likely not get you into any further education, and will most likely not get you employed anywhere. 5. Illegal unaccredited degree Totally unacredited degree, and also illegal. The institution offering this has not been allowed by any instances to do so. By using this degree, you can - in some states - go directly to jail. Will get you into no other education, and will not help you in getting any jobs. Maybe even get you fired from the job you had before you took the degree. 6. Diploma Mills "Send us your money, and we will ship you your diplomas in 5 days. Full satisfacton guaranteed". Totally illegal, and you dont΄t have to do nothing but pay to get the diplomas (maybe state some rubbish about your previous experience etc.) Have I got it right now ?

I have always viewed RA as 14k Gold and NA as 10k Gold.

Here is a question, do we consider any NA accreditor equal to DETC, or is DETC a cut above say ... ACICS and ACCSCT? As always I am not dismissing any education one acquires from these schools, just there standing in the "Traditional" University admission officers eyes.
While I see DETC gaining more respect do the others have the same? As I have not attended any NA schools I was just curious.

I think you mean 24k gold ( the highest ).
By the way just for general knowledge, Gold is a very weak substance unlike metal you can bend it really easy, That is why the maximum of gold inside a stone is 24 karat over that 25 karat is VERY soft. Karat is unit for measuring the weight of precious stones. equal to 200 milligrams It can also be spelled Carat. I learned this in chemistry class 7 years ago I have no clue why I remember this. |

This is true because the DoED actually set up the DETC to handle distance learning issues.
Eventually, DETC will become the RA for distance programs. Jacob

The CHEA website divides National Accreditation into three different categories:
Faith-Based Accrediting Organizations Private Career Accrediting Organizations Specialized/Professional Accrediting Organizations http://www.chea.org/Directories/index.asp

Hi Kyle -
I should have better things to do than make this trifling criticism, but this is a slow day... You obviously remembered the basics, BUT - the 2 words are different. Carat is the measure of the weight of a stone, as you said. Spelled with a "C" it has nothing to do with gold. Spelled with a "K," it refers strictly to gold. One karat means 1/24 part pure gold. 24 Karat gold is 100% pure gold (and very soft, as you mentioned.) There is NO 25 karat gold, or it would be around 104% pure - an impossibility. I think 14K for RA and 10K for NA were good choices. Both are recognized standards in jewellery - good grades, with one higher than the other. 24 karat would mean perfection, and I think we can agree that while some accreditation systems are good, and some may arguably be better than others, NONE is perfect! Cheers! Johann Last edited by johann : 06-25-2007 at 03:48 PM. |
