I am interested in two different subjects and feel confused which one to choose for my dissertation. I like History and Criminal Justice. I like History more than Criminal Justice but majoring in history won't help me earn much money and I don't know much about criminal justice. Please suggest what I should do.

Hi, I would personally think about what I would really want to research. If you dont have a topic that interests you or has enough information, then it will prolong your dissertation. It depends on what you want to use your degree for. Do you plan on seeking tenure track jobs or working in law enforcement? If you dont have an idea on what you plan on doing with a degree in either subject, then neither may be the right choice for you.

I was torn between the business and computer world and it finally hit me that I have had more success with my technology background and degrees than my business one, in fact my technology degrees just helped me to land a great new job and has led me to find more adjunct teaching jobs than business. This is one of the things that led me to change my proposed doctorate program from Education and seek out a technology related doctorate program.

While money is a factor and has great motivation, it shouldnt be the only reason you decide to pursue a certain subject. You should love and enjoy what you are doing. I would make a list of the pros and cons of both types of degrees and then go from there. You may want to major in criminal justice and minor in history.

Depends on what you wish to do with your degree. Would a dissertation on some narrowly-defined slice of the history of criminal justice work for your purposes?

I think that you're putting the cart ahead of the horse. Decide what you want to do with your life first and the decision will be made for you. I don't know if you are aware that there is already a surplus of History PhDs on the market. As a result you'll find 2 year colleges with instructors holding PhDs!

Criminal justice is a growing field offering more job opportunities both in law enforcement and related professions than histoy. You may want to consider that as well.
