Hello everyone! I applied yesterday to Western Governors University. It has reg. accredidation and is based on assesments. If and when you know your stuff, you sit for the exam- and your done! Easy? No, not unless you know the material. I thought this would be a good fit for me b/c I have been in my field 10+ yrs and know my industry well. I am getting my undergrad in Business- Human Resource Mgmt. My goal really is to go on to get my Masters and PHD in Organizational Dev. I am concerned of my ability to do that since WGU doesn't provide GPA, more like a pass or fail based on assesments. I wanted to get your opinions. Do you think WGU will hinder my long term plans or be frowned upon in any way?

Hi, I once considered WGU's online MBA program. The program is by no means a quick and fast degree. The school is accredited both nationally and regionally.

The admissions counselor that I spoke with said that on the transcripts you receive credit equivalency that shows what WGU's assessments are equal to. The example on the website says, "For example say you take a literature assessment, it is equal to about 12 semester credit hours of english courses."

If you are planning on getting your masters or PHD, then you should check with colleges you are interested with to see if they will accept credit. You could do your bachelors at WGU and then transfer to a Masters degree program that awards actual credit semester hours or get your masters at WGU also and fine a PHD program that accepts WGU. I know that Northcentral University, Capella, and Walden will accept credit from WGU with no problems, there are probably more that would do the same.

I enrolled in the WGU IT program in September 2008. Unfortunately I wasn't told that there weren't "real" IT classes, but that I would be working on getting certifications. The cost of each certificats is about $150, but WGU charges you about $1000 (assuming you only do 3 classes per term). So if you want to attend WGU, take all the certifications on your own, and then transfer them in. You could save over $6000+!

Also be aware that you won't get basic CS foundational courses such as OOP, Data Structures, etc.

And when I posted some negative comments about a class, it was almost immediately censored and removed.

This can be a good school, but be careful, and ask a lot of questions before you enroll. My friend is basically taking assessment for all her classes in Business, and she has completed 30+ "units" this term. So in that field, you can easily test your way through most of the classes.

Sorry to REZ a dead topic but...

I just enrolled (and started my EWB course) and was told by my enrollment counselor that ALL exams are covered as part of your tuition...

So, if you actually are/were enrolled then either something has changed since last year or you were given incorrect information.

I am planning on transferring over to this school or was at least, it was like beating the guy on the phone to get good info from them, after about an hour on the phone I learned little from him. I wanted to know how the program worked and he just kept telling much how much it cost. It worried me, I felt like they were trying to hide something from me till I signed up. I asked how many classes I could take at one time and he just changed the subject. So If you can help me let me know a little more about them.
