View Full Version : A school worth looking at.
Ahmed suggested in another string that perhaps we should talk about some of the schools that are a little more mainstream but that may be unique.
I have been looking for something to follow my MBA. My choices are a PhD in Business or Education or a doctorate in these areas. I have just reviewed the web site for Harrison Middleton University to find out about their EdD program.

This is one of the pilot programs being run by DETC. The program takes its flavour from the philospohy of HMU and is based on a humanities view of the world. I think this is an excellent program, well priced and deserving of some consideration by anyone looking at a professional doctorate in edcuation

Hi DRJ -
Yes, I looked at this school quite a while ago - before they were Harrison Middleton. At the time they were College of the Humanities and Sciences or sump'n like that. CHUMSCI was the acronym.
I was looking at the undergrad degrees, back before the first DETC pilot doctoral programs. To me, they're pretty well unique in that they do the "Great Books" philosophy (which I believe in)
(a) By distance
(b) properly and thoroughly
(c) In an accredited context.
Getting the Great Books and those 3 factors together is amazing! You can get any one of the factors at some other places. 2 or more is almost incredible!
Their undergrad degrees are a bit on the expensive side, but if some extra money showed up, I'd be there in a flash.... I'll likely never be in the market for the D.Ed. but if I were, they'd be at the top of the list!
Great to have a chance to comment on a school this GOOD! Unusual in this forum...nice change!

I think you might want to take a second look at the prices. They seem to have retreated over time. The Ed.D. for instance is a 60 hour course at 275 per hour. I think the web site suggests around 16,500 plus ancillary fees. Most of the other Ed.D or DBA I have looked at run well over 20K with most around 25K.
All that being said I really think this is a unique offering, based on an intereting premis of what education should be about. There are a couple of others that I will bring forward over the next while for consideration and comment.
PS. If there are any distance EdD or DBA out there that deserve comment please bring them forward. (especially if they are cheaper).

Hi DRJ -
I re-checked Harrison Middleton's fee schedule, as you suggested. Turns out undergrad tuition is $225 a credit hour - certainly far from unreasonable, especially considering the undeniable quality.
Were I able financially to enroll this instant (as I'd actually like to be) it would definitely be there -- they're offering exactly my preferred idea of education.
As far as Ed. D. or DBA programs at low cost - sorry, I dunno much. As far as DETC goes, I thought there might be a pilot doctoral program or two I hadn't seen, but I couldn't find any. I know there's one at Columbia Southern - a DBA. Anyway, you study there, so I'm sure you know all the details. I just checked 2 other DETC schools, Andrew Jackson U. and California Coast U. and found no doctoral programs there...couldn't find anything more on a quick visit to www.detc.org either. Maybe you can.
What about South African schools? Schools like UNISA, UniZulu, U. Pretoria etc. do high-quality DL including various doctorates at incredibly low fees by our standards. Of course, a Ph.D. requires at least some residence, but I think other doctorates can be completed via DL. I'm sure I've seen fees of around $2,000 / yr for doctoral studies. I was quite casual about looking, as I figure I'm far from doctoral material yet!
In general, SA degrees are deemed RA equivalent in the US and I'd figure they'd meet Canadian standards. Worth a look?
Cheers :-)
