Hello,

I have been a keen student of alternative, online, and distance education for many years, since discovering the works of the extraordinary Dr. Bear. Anyway, I am also a professional researcher and a friend of mine has retained me to research a suitable Masters degree for her in her field of counseling psychology. Briefly her story is this. After completing all of the course work for a Masters in counseling psychology from a major university in British Columbia, her mentor died of AIDS. At the same time she was working in the field and she let things slide. This was some years ago - she's been working in this field for ten or more years. All of her course work was satisfactory but the university will now not allow her to complete her thesis so she cannot get her Masters. Her employer is now pressuring her for her Masters. So she's got over ten years experience and all of the coursework required for a Masters but not the thesis. She's looking for a good quality Masters degree from a reputable, accredited school that will credit her for her professional experience and coursework and award her a Masters with minimal to moderate work and no residency requirement. I am still researching this but if anybody has any suggestions I would be interested in what you think. Thank you for your attention.

I'm not really sure if there are any accredited schools that offer online degrees in counseling. When my husband received his in school psychology, he had to attend a lot of highly interactive classes. He also had to complete an rigorous internship. Not sure you'll find anything over the net for this, but good luck.

...did you take your classes originally online?... i'm glad that you posted that because I've been looking at their online courses for a few years... Athabasca too, of course... looks good and have had a few good personal references about Athabasca as well...

My concern would be "what will my boss accept?" I'd hate for your friend to go through all the hassle of an online degree just to find out that the boss won't let her use it.

I guess if you stick with the highly accredited schools, you won't have a problem. But then I think your problem will be (like others have already said) being able to find an online program.

Good luck on the hunt, and please let us know what you find.
