Here is the explanation I received from NCU after I withdrew from the program on Day 2 of the course and was to receive an 80% refund of tuition:

"Thank you for your correspondence. Hopefully I can clarify the current credit balance on your account. You were originally charged tuition for PSY5005 in the amount of 1575.00 and 50.00 for a non-refundable Payment Plan Fee. Your withdrawal date of February 2, 2009 entitled you to an 80% credit of tuition in the amount of 1,260.00. You were therefore 20% vested in the course and responsible for that amount of tuition which amounts to 315.00 and a 50.00 Drop Fee. On January 13, 2009 we received a pre-payment of 443.75 from you. When the amount of tuition you are responsible for, the non-refundable Payment Plan Fee, and the Drop Fee are deducted from the pre-payment amount, you are left with a balance of -28.75. I have attached a copy of the vesting schedule for your review. The Registrar has already formally withdrawn you from Northcentral University and your account has been placed in Final Accounting so you should receive a refund within thirty days of the withdrawal date. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions or concerns. Thank you.

Susan Wilcox"

Bottom line: I paid them $443.75 and received an 80% refund of $28.75. Nice way to do business. Very lucrative.

Why should you be any different than someone who paid up-front? I think its stupid of the school to charge so much but I see their point. I do think schools should make their money from tuition, not nickel and diming and ambiguous contracts.

Dennis,
I'm not trying to be different from people who pay up front.
People should get back 80% of whatever they did pay up front, whether it was $300 or $3,000, less the nonrefundable fees.

I just think it's a poor practice and misleading and not in good faith.

Bottom line, they're keeping a lot more than 20% of monies paid them.--that's my point.

Gotcha - $50 non-refundable + $50 drop fee = chicken poo
