I've been on the forum for awhile, but I don't see anybody mention attending or wanting to attend any community college online programs. The online program that I'm a part of now is via my community college, and it's good, cheap (cheap!) and the testing, etc. is close to home.

For those of you still looking into a good program-- have you checked your community colleges to see if they have online classes?

Hi -

Good advice!

Community Colleges are great places - I'm a grad of two, here in Canada and I think maybe I recommended looking at them for writing courses, somewhere else in this forum.

There are probably 100 good things about Community Colleges. 4 of them
are:

Good instruction (generally)
Accreditation - no problems
Low cost
Good transferability of credits

I wish you well :-)

I agree. Community colleges are excellent choices, and it seems that more and more of them are going to online courses. I guess most of the people attending are more interested in the classes than the on campus experience.

Yeah. And the reason I asked is that I've been looking with everybody else here into online programs, and most of them are SO expensive... like 400$ a credit hour or more. My community college online program is 45$ a credit hour. I mean, it's a HUGE savings for a perfectly good education, and I was wondering why nobody else here really mentions it. :)

I was so happy when my community college went online. It meant I could finished my AA without transferring! And you're staying local, helping out the community. The only problem I have is the price per credit hour is three times as much as regular classes. I think mine's up to $80 per credit hour now.

How much credit do you need for an AA 60 hours?
thats around 4,800 USD

Not that much... I think a community college should not take more then 40-60 USD per credit.

But then again... a Business is a business

Yeah, that seemed high to me, too. Especially since an online class, if anything, should be cheaper rather than more expensive. No facilities to maintain.

I just don't think the community college specifically was something we all thought of. We had posted before that local colleges were a great place to start, so maybe we were also thinking that covered them - actually that's what I was thinking.

I haven't checked on the price for actually credits, but the continuing ed - which I need to do some more of - is about $80 per class.

Perhaps, but I hadn't seen it mentioned... just these larger universities that charge hundreds per credit hour. I mean, University of Phoenix is great if you have a lot to spend, but I certianly can't afford it.

Hi -

Yeah - I know. Some schools charge an AWFUL lot. But here are two Regionally Accredited schools with good DL programs and more reasonable charges - I believe about as low as 4-year RA distance programs get...

Peru State College (Nebraska) around $115 a credit hour, last I looked.

Louisiana State University - around $229 per 3-credit course?

Both RA schools with good rep. Many DL degree options. Worth a look.

Hi,
Well I just drop by the forum and it seems you guys are paying too much for a bachelor degree, an Inexpenesive degree (Cheap) degree you can earn form a community college in California they can take $18 per credit !

Now I wanted to save the cash I earn $700 a week. So I learned for 3 years in a community college I transfered my credit to a normal college, and finish my business degree from Florida state University :)

And it cost me only 10,000 USD :).

I wish I could go somewhere else, somewhere less expensive, but I face a problem--I don't have a high school diploma or GED, but I have 64 credit hours from this community college. When I was 16, I dropped out of high school, but immediately applied for college and after a series of tests, they accepted me without a diploma or GED. I suppose I could go take a GED course, but what if I simply finished my AA, would that transfer somewhere without a GED?

Question: If accepted at a CC and have 64 credit hours, why would you need a GED?

Complete the AA and then transfer - you WILL NOT NEED a GED IF you have the AA.

If you have 64 CH now, how many can be used to complete the AA or perhaps you already have the required 60?

I think more schools are letting folks in without traditional diplomas Or GED's because of the trend towards homeschooling which doesn't necessarily comply with state diplomas.

Do pursue you degree now, by any means necessary. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to finish and the harder it may be to get exceptions.

I think I'm only missing a computer class, which is really ironic. I'm checking on it Monday. I have plans to finish next semester, I'll just stick to them. Thanks for the advice!

I have taught for Trinidad State for a number of years through the Colorado Community College Online system (CCCOnline.org) and the programs are worthwhile.

Hi!

Always glad to hear from Community College instructors - I'm a fan! I think there's a lot of us Community College types here - some who wouldn't be grads if they'd had to face tuition elsewhere! I'm one!

Your message is great, so you're always welcome to preach, "Brother!" Even if some of us are already among the "converted", we'll NEVER tire of hearing it!!

Cheers - and I wish you continued success! :-)
