I attended New College of California and graduated in 1978. I heard about them through John Bear's guide. In the same year that I attended New College I got to know John Bear and he got me interested in investigating Diploma Mills.

The reason I am writing about New College now is that the school is in horrible financial shape, has lost its accreditation and will probably close. I wanted to go on record as speaking about my experience at the school.

My education was absolutely supreme. I was well prepared for the business world once I left school. I had no problems landing jobs, in fact many employers were impressed with my Humanities background. They considered me "well rounded". My career in technology took off and I've worked for such companies as MCI, Compaq, GTE, Oracle. You may hear some comments about New College that really put it down, but I can honestly say that when I attended I had no problems qualifying for a Cal State Scholarship and Work Study.

Yes, it was a different kind of school. I am a visual learner and they welcomed that.

I see the downfall of New College as it expanded it's programs to more than it could handle, depended on the DOE and had no endowment built up and there has been no communication with the board and the school status since the accreditation was pulled by WASC. That is not the New College I knew.

In any case, I loved my time there and that is what I will remember about the school. I've started a website for those who are supporters, students, alumni and anyone interested in New College. The url is http://www.friendsofnewcollege.com We have a yahoo email group you are welcome to sign up for as well as the website.

Hi -

I've read similar good things about New College in other fora -- grads who had stellar experiences. Too bad about what happened, and your opinion about why it happened is supported by many others.

Yes, probably the College will close - and it will be a sad day. Hopefully, one day, its spirit will be regenerated in another school.

I wish you and the Group well. :-)

Johann

A current professor of mine, who is a graduate of the school, believes there will be an attempt to revive the school over the summer break. He has been asked to fly out and see if he can help with the revival.

I hope it turns out well and I too wish your group well.
