Most people do not know that they have high blood cholesterol levels, since there are no symptoms. Lowering your blood cholesterol numbers will reduce your risk for heart disease, heart attack, and is important for everyone, of any age, even if you do not have heart disease now. Cholesterol neither causes heart attacks nor another illness. The cholesterol hypothesis is, and I am not kidding anyone, the biggest deception of the people in the history of medicine.
People with high cholesterol live the longest.Dietary intake of cholesterol does not influence the serum cholesterol.
The world average of serum chol. is 260 mg/dl (6.7 mmol/L) which makes current recommendations ludicrous.
The entire hype, brought to life by mongrel Ancel Keys in the early fifties is seriously flawed and has been completely debunked over 20 years ago.
I suggest you read Ravnskov, U. The Cholesterol Myths, Anthony Colpo "The Great Chol. Con", look in to the www.THINCS.org Organisation and stop making propaganda statements here that are likely to sell even more statins.

I respect your opionion that you believe this to be hype. But there are just as many reputable people that say it is bad for you. There is no need to get defensive about it.

It's not defensiveness that you see, it's indignation. Those who still believe in the cholesterol hypothesis are divided into two groups: The dummies and the crooks.
You say there are many who believe in it. There were many millions who believed in Hitler as well.

Calm down already. I can understand you disagreeing with my point of view. BUT your comparison to Hitler concerning cholessterol are way two different subjects.

Is there a specific reason you ask me to calm down?
Lowering cholesterol accomplishes several (undesirable) things:
1. Reduces cholesterol that is essential for rebuilding
2. Deprives the endocrine system of chol. to make hormones
3. Leads (in some people) to fatal illness called rhabdomyolysis
4. Increases the chances of dying early
5. Dramatically increases susceptibility to cancer
6. Reduces IQ and interferes with cognition
7. Causes pains and destruction in musculoskeletal system
8. Deprives the heart and all other cells of Coenzyme Q-10 (essential to life)
9. Increases suicidal ideation
Enough? There is no good or bad cholesterol and every person near death or gravely ill will have very low serum cholesterol. The reason for that is that the body is using up all available cholesterol to try to fix the illness.
To give medication (statins) to lower cholesterol is akin to committing assault and, often, murder.
I only mention this here because I feel it my duty to tell people so they can get informed and make intelligent choices if they so desire.
I see too many people whose lives were ruined by fiddling with cholesterol.

Yes, the reference to Hitler I personally thought was uncalled for. As for the information you provided, thank you. I would have to agree with you on the fact that there is good and bad cholesterol.
