What if we tried to change the education paradigm so that all education was online? Would the Ivy Leagues of the worls retain their dominance? Would the price points for education shift significantly downmward?

Not an option. Lots of people want that "on campus" experience, not to mention the whole world of sports. Besides, some people are audio learners and would never get it online. They need to be face to face with the professor.

That's very true. A lot of people have a hard time learning via text and reading. However, the online experience has changed a lot since online degrees became an option. They have video and audio classes sometimes now for people who learn better that way.
But I think you're right. For many people, nothing can substitute the classroom experience. Listening and learning and sharing ideas in real time. I think many of us online learners would like to do that, probably, even if just for the classes that truly interest us. That's how I feel, at least.

I would love to be able to have gone through my whole degree program in person, but the flexibility of online learning was the only way I could pull off finishing my degree.

Yeah, Lyric... I think that's the way that it is for a lot of people. For me, too, at least. I like the idea of the classroom environment... talking face to face, sharing ideas, but... it's just not possible for me. I think for most people, online schooling is done from necessity, not preference.

I don't really think that would work too well. There are some people who would do really great and some people who would just sink into insanity. It takes a certain type of person to do online classes and if you aren't one of them you would be in trouble. I had to drop one class because the way it was taught online just didn't work for me. I needed so much more than an online environment could give me, if all my classes were like that I would have never got a degree.

Although online education is more convenient for the busy people, there's no way that it would help if 100% of education was online. If I had the choice, I'd much prefer face-to-face then online.

I feel most of the high school kids who go on to college need that experience, I'd be lost without it. Kind of a lesson in living in the real world, but still have counselors and teachers to lean on. Now, however, I'm trying to continue my education and online courses are my only option.

I think that online degrees are more about convenience than anything else. Most people would prefer the brick and mortar, but some of us just can't work that out. For those who need it, online degrees were the perfect solution.

I think their is a lot of merit in both ways. I prefer online, its more flexible, I don't have a set time to learn or a rigid schedule to adhere to. I'm good visual or audio learner so to me being online is great.

I like to do my schooling online. But I also know that some people think that I am crazy for not going on campus to do my schooling. Also some people preferred to be around with other students and actually be there on campus. But overall it all depends what works for you.

I think most of the folks that "go" to college are looking for the experience as much as the education. Besides, what would we do about football if all education was online ;).

I think ruby has a good point about college-- high school kids still need that social experience. Adults do not. Kids that age have a lot to learn about life, and the crazy college experience probably teaches them a lot.
Though I wouldn't know first-hand, as I didn't have one. :p

yeh i totally think that most people want to actually have a place that they go to, and different buildings to live in and take classes in. i think that the whole idea of alumni would be messed up with only online schools.

All sports for that matter.
Plus, lots of folks take great pride in where they went to school, not just in what they took.
Ideally it would all be about education. But some college is for the experience - sorry mom and dad!

nah its a lot about the experience. the education is one thing, but the growing up that happens by being on your own is just so much more than you could get staying at home and taking classes online.
