Has anyone had any bad experinces with either of these schools: Kaplan University and University of Phoenix? From advertising they are the most well known. Although Kaplan has accreditation, they are expensive, though less so than U of Phoenix. Why are online schools so expensive? I would hate to take out a loan of $1000, $2000 just to give to an online school.
I would rather have some money coming back to myself. I wonder if they purposedly raise the tuition in a way to force the students to take loans with no money received back to the student?

Everyone has bad experience with ether one of the schools I read so many articles on why not to go to Kaplan and I read even more articles why not to go the phoenix.
You chose the biggest two universties online out of 100,000 Students a year alot complain.
I will never dare to tell you which University to choose, You better ask your friends or people you know who studied online and can back up the answers.
But accredition is the number one thing you should check if it is state accredition or nationally accredition,
Why do you need accredition: Let say in 8 month you get sick of studing online and you decide to move to a normal offline college or university, to transfer the 8 month into credit points you will be able to do it with this only if the university is nationally accredited.
Accredition for employment: more and mor eemployers check if the school is accredited if it is not ! You will not get the benfits of higher salary.
Goverment employment: if you choose to work in any govermental JOB you can forget about it ! once you submit your certification to the goverment office with an unaccredited degree they see you as a scammer.
Anyways good luck with your online education, I'd also check out John Bear guide he sells his books on amazon.com they are quite good. and everybody else recommend it so I am following that stream :)
P.S
Before you spent you money on nothing do a large research DO NOT BELIEVE any documentation or the sales team in any online university they are all LIERS, good resources on the web is www.ed.gov (http://www.ed.gov) www.chea.org (http://www.chea.org) and a few articles you can also find at www.degree.net (http://www.degree.net) :)
"Stop right now waiting a minute University..waaaa..ii..ttt University... Is there accredition, accredition for me"

University of Phoenix was noted for having a good MBA program for a few years, but over the last 5 years, their reputation has really slipped including how they treat students and their own staff. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and had a friend who graduated from the MBA program back in 1999. She didn't have much to say about the experience. It was about what she expected from an online degree (although she did hate, hate the workgroups).
Unfortunately, U of Phoenix has changed their focus from providing a high quality business degree to simply making money. The experience level of their instructors has declined, while the sales tactics and pressure to enroll have really increased. Even the onsite classes are impersonal and everyone walks around with a scowl on their faces.
Just to let you know how bad its become, U of Phoenix was sued by their own employees for cheating them on their wages and for discrimination. The employees won. Just this week, ANOTHER law suit was filed against U of Phoenix for discrimination in favor of enrollment counselors who are members of the LDS church. If they will cheat their own employees, they will certainly try to cut corners with students.

When I think online degrees, I think U of Phoenix. I don't know if I want to graduate from a program which is so well known for being accelerated online classes.

Here's a little tid bit from a former employee of Kaplan. I started off as an Admissions Advisor, but moved up into management pretty quickly while there. Now, the school as a whole is pretty good. They develope programs with people that worked in that field, true professionals. Their CJ program is very well liked in the CJ industdry.
Now for the bad side. Kaplan does pay it's Admissions Advisors based on production. They have several deferent levels of pay that call the Gem Levels. Some of the Advisors are making over $70k. All Online Universities are like this. All of them pay there Advisors based on production. Don't kid yourself when one tells you that you are not a number when they want to enroll you. You're a number, with a bar code, and only a means to a higher paycheck.
Now, that's not to say that all of the advisors that work for these online schools are evil, some of them are very caring about who they deal with. And truely do have the prospective students best interests at heart. While with others, it's just a means to a fatter paycheck.
When I was at Kaplan, I had some major issues with a few people that I worked with...ie...my boss's. both of these people were only interested in numbers. Get the student it. It was my job to make sure that only good students came in the door. The students that weren't pressured, that did want to do this, that truely felt that they could deal with online studies. I left because they didn't care if the student was ready, or if the student was able to do the work load. Only that they enrolled, registered for classes, did their financial aid, and lasted through the first week of classes. That's it!
Again, some good points...I don't want it to seem that I'm a jadded former employee. I'm really not. I took the online program there, and I liked it...and I'll telly you this, any online school program is not easy...they start off that way, but slowly build up and become harder and harder. Kaplan is at least good at easing you into the program. Starting you off slow, and slowly getting you ready for the harder classes. Not everyone can do it...it takes a lot of self disiplin.
Ok...I'm just rambing now.
