Hey all. I'm interested in doing an online degree program, but I'm not quite clear on how it works. I finished high school and took some community college courses, but I never bothered to take my SATs. I guess I was too busy being young and stupid. Were I to apply for an online degree though a major university, would I be required to take the SAT's, etc.?

That would depend on the school you are applying to. Many will allow you to omit the Sat's if you have a certain number of college credits ready to transfer in.

But, generally, most universities will require that you take them, even for online programs? Drat. I guess I should start looking into it, then.

I've never taken the SAT's or ACT's and I'm just a few classes from my degree. I think if you tranfser enough credits, as mentioned above, then they don't need the scores at all.

I would say that if you do have to take the SAT's, complete some kind of test prep course. Whether it be a book, classes or PC program. The test has changed a lot recently and can be a bit overwhelming when you've been out of school for any time really, heck it's overwhelming even for those still in school.

There are many things that have changed in the curricula and those which we had before have been changed a lot. I, for one, am not confident anymore to work in the field of study that I have graduated because I haven't been able to practice it for a long time. As with regards to examinations, since the curricula has changed, the exams will definitely change, too.

It definitely does depend upon which school you are applying to as they all differ in requirements. Not everyone necessarily takes the SATS.....it will often depend upon whether you start up at a junior college versus University.

Yeah, it might help to take online courses through a community/junior college that does not require standardized test scores and then transfer in.

A word of advice: if you find you cannot get out of taking a standardized test, see if you can take the ACT instead of the SAT. It actually is a better measure of your capabilities.

Oh, that's good news! I do have quite a lot of transfer credits. And I dread dread dread taking the SAT's. My field of interest is completely unrealated in any way to, say, math and science (which I hate and am not good at), so I would hate to have to try to pass those parts of the test to finish my degree.

Work with the institution you have chosen.

When it was time for me to take my SATs I fell ill and had major surgery as a teenager. My intended college made an exception based on my high school GPA and accepted me.

When I returned to a different college a few years later, they looked at my history/GPA from both high school and college and allwed me in.

Now I have a basic track record  and will never take the SAT. LOL

You know, I was just thinking about posting this same question before I came to the site. I think after reading all of these answers I am going to definitely look in to taking ACT (as suggested) or the SATs just to be on the safe side.
