Hello All,

I'm trying to find a comprehensive list of 'diploma mill programs/institutions/universities' to assist me in the 'recruiting work' I do. Does anyone have any advice as to where I could go online to access/view such a list?

3 institutions that come to mind now are:

Washington International University in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA.
American University of London
University of Honolulu

Thanks.

Hi, Cairene -

With Internet-based scams at their current level, we probably need the list updated half-hourly. I don't know if there is a "complete" - i.e. world-wide list, but the Oregon State list is well-known and as a bonus, the same page links you to Maine's list. Michigan also maintains one and other states may, as well.

Have a look at: http://www.osac.state.or.us/oda/unaccredited.html

No such 'official' list exists. The Council of Europe tried to maintain one, but it was not trusted and therefore died. Each jurisdictions considers the legitimacy of a degree based on its own laws and regulations. Oregon has the some of the strictest laws, whilst many other jurisdictions have none. My advice is take the alternative approach - compile your own database from credible sources and questions names that do not come up. Depending which country you are in will determine where you first obtain these resources.

Cheers,

George

I think the europe council got it all wrong :) they should just make a list of legitimate schools instead of illegal schools.

It's really unfortunate that there are so many scam schools out there. What an unbelieveably long list! I had no idea there were so many. This is something that everybody should check out when searching for an online degree program.

My private database of bad and fake schools is currently above 2,700. Most of it appears, as an unannotated list, in the 16th edition of Bears Guide.

In addition to the Oregon list, the Michigan list is helpful:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/Non-accreditedSchools_78090_7.pdf

And there is a very reliable, if anonymous, information source at:

Hi -

Depends on what you call a diploma mill. I don't believe Akamai sells degrees. Coursework is required. So - that's one definition of "mill" that it doesn't meet.

Akamai is definitely not accredited by a recognized accreditor. For this reason, it's on the well-known "State Lists" of unaccredited schools, degrees from which are not valid (and illegal in some cases) in those states for employment purposes etc.

I call it an unaccredited school, 'cause that's what it IS. Mill? Not for me to say. Now, if they started pumping out degrees for $500 all-inclusive in 5 days (which they don't) I'd say something.

I don't recall Bear ever mentioning Akamai to be a degreemill. Maybe he got in a snit with Capogrossi? Akamai U is thriving in a state where dozens of schools have been shut down for real or purported malfeasances. Presuming Jeff Brunton knows what he is doing in Hawaii, and I assume he does, I don't suspect a problem.

Hi, I was surprised that Rushmore is in a diploma mill list.
It might be mistake.
Some of their professor is Prof. Dr. Bernard L. Beatty & prof. Donald Mitchell

Rushmore might have useful programs but it has a history of riding out of town just ahead of the sheriff. What is its current address?

Rushmore is a legitimate but uncreadited online institution.
Recently Rushmore has booth at the Bangkok Student Fair.

So, in conclusion it is not a diploma mill that sells degree.

Hi -

As expected, Rushmore's website reveals no clue as to its physical location. As Dennis writes, its past involves several states - South Dakota, Wyoming and Georgia and according to the Wiki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rushmore_University the mailing address in 2006 was in the Cayman Islands.

I guess that's the "fiscal" location. I expect Rushmore's "physical" location (consisting largely of file cabinets and a computer or two?) is wherever its President, Dr. Michael Cox (yes he has a real Ph.D. - Oklahoma State) keeps the files and any Rushmore-dedicated computer hardware. I read an article some time ago that said he was (at that time) "running Rushmore from his basement office" in his home.

Whatever one's opinion of Rushmore as a school, one has to admit, per square foot it's likely turning a record profit for any LEGAL type of home basement operation! ....Maybe they DO have something to teach in regard to business success! :-)

Very strange it URL ends with .us but not .edu!
It is very active in Malaysia and make a lot of money from them!

Hi -

Prior to Akamai, we were discussing another unaccredited school, Rushmore. We (all right, I) mentioned that Rushmore's owner, Dr. Michael Cox, has a REAL doctorate - from Oklahoma State.

The President of Akamai, Dr. Douglas Capogrossi, holds three degrees - Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D., all from the prestigious Cornell University, Ithaca N.Y.

This is not an endorsement (or condemnation) of Rushmore or Akamai - so don't rush off to the post office with a money order, unless you feel Akamai/Rushmore is exactly what you need... Just a comment on one similarity: two university owners with (multiple) accredited degrees, now in the business of providing unaccredited ones.... although I'll grant that Akamai has not-for-profit status in Hawaii, per its website.

To Akamai's credit, it appears to be one of the VERY few unaccredited schools to survive Hawaii's crackdown! That has to mean something! All in all, Akamai has to be one of the most interesting unaccredited schools I've come across. As I said, that's not an endorsement or condemnation - do what YOU think is best! :-)

Akamai U. obviously started after the .edu url became restricted to accredited schools. Note that many unaccredited schools and some outright degreemills have the .edu url because they were grandfathered.

I would really hate to label Akamai University as a degreemill. I believe it to be a serious operation. Any school that can operate in Hawaii and stay out of the way of their consumer affairs attorney, Jeff Brunton, is to be congratulated. His enforcement of legislation has caused the closing of endless Hawaian schools.

University of Atlanta is not a mill!!It is DETC accredited!

And the University of Atlanta probably never was a degreemill.

My criticism of degreemill lists is twofold.

1) This exact situation happens. A school becomes accredited and they stay on government lists because no-one in the civil service has the knowledge or the ambition to remove them.

2) Degreemills often use a name very similar to a real university so the real school pays the price for the degreemill being on the list.

These lists which seem to be repeats of the Oregon list assume that all unaccredited schools are degreemills. This is so far from the truth that it is almost laughable. Every school starts out unaccredited. A better situation is to direct people to lists of accredited schools but unless they are updated they quickly become meaningless too.

Hi xxxswiss,

The European University Center for Management Studies claims membership in the AACSB and the ACBSP. Both are CHEA recognized accreditors. AACSB is one of the most pretigious business school accreditors worldwide. ACBSP is a recognized NA accreditor - if not the most prestigious. Many accredited US institutions, pursue ACBSP accrditation as a second accreditation for their business programs. I'm not familiar with the other organizations on their website.

I have found the school on the ACBSP website ( http://www.acbsp.org/index.php?mo=st&op=ld&sid=s1_025about&stpg=141 ) listed as a candidate for accreditation. The ACBSP lists the school as being located in Barcelona. You should verify that the branch that you wish to attend is included in the scope of the accreditation. Remember candidacy shows that the school is in the process of accreditation, it is not full accreditation.

I did not find the European University on the list of accredited schools on the AACSB site. That doesn't mean it's not there. You can contact them and ask (777 South Harbour Island Boulevard, Suite 750, Tampa, FL 33602-5730 USA Tel: 813-769-6500 Fax: 813-769-6559). They may indeed be a member. The AACSB have a Members Directory but it is only available to members. In any event please note the AACSB site says the following:
AACSB International membership does not confer AACSB accreditation and should not be interpreted as achieving accreditation. - http://www.aacsb.edu/accreditation/AccreditedMembers.asp .

In a nutshell. The European University is probably not a mill. It is in the process of accreditation by ACBSP. Studying at a candidate university is always a risk. If they complete the process before you graduate you're OK. If they complete it shortly afterwards, it's not so bad. If they are denied accreditation, the candidacy is worthless. You might want to check out the non-US affiliations. Maybe one of them constitutes full accreditation. What are your goals in pursuing this degree? Maybe someone in the forum can suggest other alternatives. This may be what you are looking for, but give the pros and cons careful consideration before enrolling.

Not impressive. There website is cleverly done but suspiciously "millish" in their requirements and tuition pages. This seems to be the template/beta-site that they used for their website:
http://www.spaxon.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63&Itemid=59 It seems inconceivable that an instution could provide all that they advertise while nobody knows anything about it. Their website home page is not functioning. You have to access the site from other pages. There is a lot of obviously phoney press coverage on the Web.

I searched forums and found a thread that confirms my own impressions.

Try some of these links. Their site is poorly maintained and occaisionally disappears. Right now the homepage is down but you can use these back doors. I think the site is all smoke and mirrors - including the on-campus studies.

Interesting I always thought that was against the law.

DLG
07-26-2008, 09:00 PM
Hi Bout2givup53,

Many of the names on the list aren't really schools at all. They don't teach anything. They are purveyors of fraudulent diplomas. In some cases what they do is outright illegal but they opperate behind fronts that are difficult for enforcement agencies to penetrate. The anonymity of the internet helps them a great deal. Often they operate out of jurisdictions that are indifferent to their activities. In other cases. They manage to take advantage of legal technicalities to stay just inside the law.

Hi -

Next time, please give us a website. I searched www.onlinedegrees.com and was unable to find a reference to any school containing the word "Valley." Nearly all the schools I saw named on that site had CHEA-recognized accreditation.

There are QUITE A FEW legit schools with "Valley" and "Valley State" in their names. I was only able to find one "illegitimate" one, here:

http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:0WDIzCwQxVEJ:www.coltonuniversity.o rg/pages/whysdp.htm+%22Valley+University%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=10&gl=ca

I found the above Valley University webpage (cached) that was buried in the site of "Colton University" which is a fairly well-known fake, discussed in this forum and on just about all bad-school lists everywhere.

In their blurb, the proud parents refer to their ugly hatchling variously as "Valley University" and "Valley State University." Caution! As I said earlier, there are QUITE A FEW 100% legit schools with "Valley" and "Valley State" in their names. The web-page cited above does not appear to be the work of such a school.

If you can give us a weblink to the school you saw advertised, maybe we can do better. :-)

There is a way around all of this and that to make all of these so called diploma mills work even harder by creating better programs for the usage of life experience to college credits. Although I have a traditional education, there is a lot to be said for life experience. We like to do what most folks call "sleep on on someones skills" so to speak. That person never gets a chance to prove they may be smarter than the others around them due to work load or what have you. Yes we have three colleges that provide assessment programs related to life experiences, but to say that life experience is a crock as to college learning would make you a complete knuckle head. There are so many non-collegiate programs out there that provide a cheaper form of training to the public yet none of it is "worthy of college accreditation" we all know this is just plane ridiculous. Let's hold these life experience colleges or diploma mills to the fire and create a better program to put them out of business instead of attempting to create bogus laws which make no sense what so ever!!

We'll have to define the word "bad". Since most regulated industries only recognize accredited degrees for job applications, pay step increases, and other experience-based benefits...then maybe bad is the right word.

Most accredited colleges and universities will only accept transfer credits from other accredited programs. Black belt moderators, check me on that one.

As I see it the unaccredited grow because business is thriving. Here they say that both accredited and unaccredited can give equivalent education. Isn't this "protectionism" since in my view education thrives with availability, competition, and affordability and off course transparency? If we are going to have quality based on name then we are not far from fashion. In Europe all education is free and believe me the standard gets higher because people study to fulfill they dream and of the country. I believe the goal of education should turn us back to knowledge and not bickering which university is accredited or not. If there were no problem all this "bogus" some with good motivation wouldn't arise. I feel sometimes we the intellectual so called are afraid that we ourselves are bogus with accredited degree. My wish is to make education available to all and that is the best education I have learned.

Hello All,
I agree with the various comments made by you all except that I do feel that we should differentiate between those institutions which just sell certificates or degrees, the real 'diploma mills' and those other institutions which, although not accredited by formally recognized accrediting agencies who, nevertheless, offer courses which do require real work and real study and which evaluate submitted work.
