Hi,
Does anyone here have an opinion good or bad on the US Career Institute? I am considering their Online Veterinary Assistant career diploma program. I already have an AAS degree in Animal Science(attended an actual school) and I just want to brush up on my skills before re entering the workforce after taking time off to take care of my kids. \ The web address is: http://www.uscareerinstitute.com Last edited by eileen20 : 03-08-2007 at 07:16 PM. |

I have not heard of US Career Institute, and so cannot provide any feedback about it.
However, Penn Foster, which has accreditation, also offers a course in Veterinary Assistant, http://www.pennfoster.edu/vetassistant/index.html You might want to check them out, if you haven't already.

I checked out PennFoster and almost enrolled with them till I read their record with the BBB. They have a lot of complaints lodged against them. The US Career Institute's record with the BBB was much better. But since I havent seen much about them anywhere else I posted here to ask if any one else had heard of them. They are also known as Weston Distance Learning and are located in Ft Collins, CO.

I don't know what the complaints were, but I thought PFC was top-notch and I know a few other people that took some courses too and never had any issues. Good Luck!!

I am currently looking at Penn Foster & US Career Institute for Vet Assistant and I cannot decide which one would be better. I was worried about them being legit, but I have been reading everyone's discussions on that fact and i am good with that. US courses seem to be more in depth, but either way I am worried this diploma or certificate, is going to be enough to get a good job with a vets office or zoo or something. Any one out there know for sure?

>>>I am wondering if there is anyone on this forum who has completed the program??? I want to know the likelihood of actually getting a job after completion of the program, estimated pay, how you like it. Also if you can start out working from home or if you have to start in an office. I am a mother of a 5 yr old and about to have another baby so I am looking for a new career where I can work from home and avoid having to pay outrageous daycare costs for 2 kids. Please help |

Hi!
I have almost the same questions as Kernbob and would like to add the question "has anyone tried to take the CPC-A or CCA exam after getting a certifcate from the US Career Inst.?" I have looked at the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) websites and found little info on which schools might be the best to enroll in (except, of course, their own). AHIMA did provide a small list of online certificate courses but they seem to be expensive and either want the tuition up front or need you to borrow (with interest) the funds. I used the Pell grant for my undergraduate degree and borrowed a LOT for graduate school. I can't afford much more. US Career Inst. seems do-able. I just want to work at home with the possibility of building a business. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated... Thanks, Booba ![]() |

From her experience there are very few stay at home jobs in these fields, do not let the advertisements fool you. Most hospitals prefer that their HIM personnel and coders, actually work in the hospital, especially if records or other confidential documents are requested. The programs at AHIMA are expensive, check the website to see what programs are licensed in your state, you may find cheaper ones. |
